A History of the Prayer Movement
The International House of Prayer has continued in non-stop prayer led by worship teams since September 19, 1999, and is committed to combining 24/7 prayers for justice with 24/7 works of justice. Around 1,500 people (staff members, students, interns) serve full-time on the missions base, investing fty hours per week in the prayer room, classroom, and ministry outreaches. Mike is also the founder of the International House of Prayer University which includes a full-time Bible school, music school, and media school. We refer to our full-time staff at the International House of Prayer as “intercessory missionaries.” They raise their own support to work as full-time missionaries who reach out to others from a lifestyle of prayer and worship. Today, about 2,000 believers (staff, students, and interns) serve full-time, investing fifty hours per week, as they go from the prayer room to the classroom and then to ministry outreaches and works of service. Also, as those who are committed to the forerunner message, we are spiritually equipping ourselves to prepare others for the unique dynamics of the generation in which the Lord returns.

Mike Bickle Meets Bob Jones
When the two first met, Bob Jones told Mike Bickle that the Lord would use him to pastor a young adult movement of singers and musicians who would pray for Israel and have strong ties to Asia. Mike initially didn’t believe Bob, but two weeks later it was confirmed to him that Bob, in fact, had heard from the Lord. Bob, who passed away in 2014, played a pivotal role in encouraging Mike during the early years of the movement and was a great friend to IHOPKC. The ministry has also drawn fire for helping Gov. Rick Perry of Texas plan a day of prayer in Houston, which is scheduled for August and will be dominated by ardent opponents of abortion and gay rights. Mr. Bickle said he avoided direct involvement in partisan politics himself, but a member of his leadership group, Lou Engle, has a side group, The Call, that organized stadium revivals to promote California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage.

Mike’s teaching emphasizes growing in passion for Jesus through intimacy with God, doing evangelism and missions work from the place of night and day prayer, and the end times. The prayer room webstream began with only one camera in 2003, exposing worship with prayer to a global audience. Over the years we’ve received many reports of believers from all over the world (including Christians in persecuted lands) who are encouraged by watching the prayer room. The webstream also blesses many houses of prayer across the globe by providing live worship with prayer. Our vision is to work in relationship with the wider Body of Christ to engage in the Great Commission, as we seek to walk out the two great commandments to love God and people.

On May 7, 1999, the International House of Prayer began in the “old trailers” on Grandview Road, with 13 hours of prayer and worship each day. Mike Bickle and a small group of intercessors and worship leaders staffed the prayer room. Our hearts overflow with thanks to the Lord for His grace and faithfulness to us over the years. As different ethnic groups continued to grow in our community, more languages were added to prayer meetings. On June 10, 2013, we dedicated the All Nations Prayer Room to the Lord where prayer with worship was led 85 hours per week in nine languages—Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Farsi, Portuguese, French, and German. Founded 12 years ago by Mike Bickle, a self-trained evangelical pastor, with a group of 20, the International House of Prayer, in a former strip mall, now draws tens of thousands of worshipers to its revival meetings. A wholly devoted cadre of 1,000 staff members, labeled missionaries, have given up careers to move here, living off donations and spending several hours a day in the prayer hall to revel in what they describe as direct communication with God. They’ve since grown to hosting multiple camps each summer and have seen camps established across the US and internationally in places like Poland.
